There are times when we can prepare ourselves for the process, and then there are times when we are faced with the decision unexpectedly. What is pet euthanasia and how do I know when it’s the right time?

Euthanasia is the option to put your pet to rest if they are suffering in some way. It is a painless injection of an anesthetic drug to end their life in a very humane way.

The hardest part of being a pet owner is knowing when it is the right time to say goodbye. Whether you have known a dog its whole life or just a few short months, this decision is never easy. Your veterinary health team is always available to have a discussion with you about quality of life and to help guide you so you can make a well-informed decision.

Can I say goodbye to my pet in the comfort of our home?

We do our best when it comes to providing at home euthanasia. These appointments often need to be set up well in advance. If we are unable to make it to your home, Sitka Veterinary Services provides house calls exclusively.

How is the euthanasia drug administered?

Every euthanasia is handled with the utmost respect and compassion. After checking in with our front receptionists, you will be asked if you would like to have your dog privately cremated (ashes returned in an urn of your choice), cremated with other animals (no ashes back), or you may wish to take your dog home for burial. You and your dog will then be led into one of our side rooms with a separate exit. Your veterinarian will discuss the entire process with you, as well as inform you of the things you may or may not experience. Your dog will receive a sedative which is usually administered by injection. It will help alleviate any anxiety your dog may have and can also reduce any pain or discomfort your companion may be feeling. Owners are encouraged to stay with their companion for as long as they need. A final injection will be administered intravenously, and your dog will pass away peacefully.

We do not provide counseling in clinic, but we can provide pamphlets with contact information for counseling services at your request.
